Student – Change Password

We build computer security using the following factors:

·         What you know (e.g., a password).

·         What you have (e.g., a physical object like an ID card).

·         Who you are (e.g., a fingerprint or other biometric data).

Gaining access by authenticating may use just one of these factors (Single Factor Authentication) or more than one factor (Multi Factor Authentication).

–       To get into your house you need to have a key – single

–       To get money at an ATM you need to have the card and know the PIN – multi

At STU in order to access your computer and the STU network, you are required to supply a known password.  This is single factor authentication, therefore your password needs to be strong (hard to figure out), because we cannot tell if it is you, only that we were provided your password.  This means that someone providing your password moves around in our systems as if they were you and it all looks normal to us.

Do not reuse your STU Password anywhere; this greatly reduces the chance of your password being discovered.


To make a strong password try Four Random Words.  Why?

–       Easy to type – all lower case letters

–       Easier to remember then the older style – Y%^110w123!

–       Strong – very hard to guess

Size – 14 to 30 characters (don’t need special characters all lowercase leters is ok)

Good   e.g.      correcthorsebatterystaple    do not use this example it is too public

Bad      e.g.      bobspassword            too short, contains “password”

If you want even stronger authentication, you could set up multi factor authentication using your smartphone, office phone or other device.   Once you change your password, please contact the helpdesk if you would like to set up MFA.

Student – STU email password

If you know your password but want to change it:

  • Sign in to your email.
  • Click on the arrow next to your email address in the top right corner of the screen.
  • Click Account.
  • Click Security.
  • Click Change Password.
  • Enter current and new passwords.
  • Confirm your new password. Click Change Password.


If you have forgotten your password:

Please go to the JDH Helpdesk with your student ID, a lab assistant will be available to help.

Faculty & Staff – STU email password

Please follow the instructions below to change both your email password and Computer Network Account password:

  1. Go to
  2. Enter your username, current password, and new password.
  3. Confirm your new password
  4. Click on “Change Password”

Students – If you have forgotten your network password (Webadvisor, Moodle, Wireless etc)
  • Go to
  • Click on the “forgotten password?” blue link at the bottom.
  • Type in your STU E-mail address.
  • You will receive an e-mail that will provde further instructions on resetting your password.
If you know your network password (Webadvisor, Moodle, Wireless etc.) but want to change it
  • Go to
  • Enter your username and your current password.
  • Enter in your desired password.
  • Click the Change Password button
